The Challenge

As the customer was developing its next-generation “Aura 8” Surgical Navigation System for use inside the Operating Room (OR). The display HMI (Human-Machine Interface) was the system’s core, and it faced a unique combination of critical challenges:

Mission-Critical Reliability:

The system cannot fail during a procedure. A screen flicker, missed touch, or boot failure would be a catastrophic safety event. It demanded 24/7/365, “five-nines” (99.999%) reliability.

Strict Clinical & Usability Demands:

The HMI had to be usable by surgeons in the most demanding conditions:

  • Surgical Glove Touch: It must register touch commands perfectly through multiple layers of latex or nitrile surgical gloves.

  • Fluid & Contaminant Rejection: It had to intelligently reject false touches from fluids (saline, blood, cleaning agents).

  • Surgical Light Glare: It needed to be perfectly readable under intense, direct overhead surgical lights.

Regulatory & Lifecycle Crisis:

Medical devices require 7-10+ year lifecycles due to the multi-million dollar, multi-year cost of FDA/CE certification. Their previous display supplier issued an “End-of-Life” (EOL) notice on a critical touch controller, threatening the entire “Aura 8” program and forcing a complete, costly re-certification.

They needed a display partner—not a supplier—who could engineer a clinically-perfect, “zero-failure” HMI and contractually guarantee its supply chain for a decade.

Our Solutions + Services

Logic was selected as their exclusive HMI partner for the project. We delivered a complete, compliance-ready HMI assembly.

Custom "Compliance-Ready" 21.5” 4K TFT

We engineered a custom 21.5-inch 4K (Ultra HD) TFT display module. The entire assembly was pre-certified by us to meet IEC 60601-1 (Electrical Safety) and IEC 60601-1-2 (EMC) standards, providing robust EMI shielding to prevent interference with other OR equipment.

"Surgical-Grade" PCAP Touch Tuning

Our engineers developed a proprietary firmware for the PCAP touch controller. This custom tuning provided two critical features: perfect touch registration through multiple layers of surgical gloves (latex and nitrile) and advanced algorithms to intelligently reject false inputs from saline, blood, and cleaning fluids.

Optical Bonding

To eliminate glare from intense surgical lights, the high-brightness TFT panel was optically bonded to the cover glass. This process eliminated the air gap, preventing internal fogging, reducing reflections to near zero, and dramatically increasing impact strength.

Hygiene-First Design & Long-Term Supply

We designed an edge-to-edge, anti-microbial cover glass that created an IP65-rated seal with their enclosure, leaving no bezels for contaminants to hide. Most importantly, we provided a 10-Year “Frozen Bill of Materials (BOM)” guarantee, contractually ensuring the exact same panel, controller, and components would be available for the entire product lifecycle, eliminating all future re-certification risk.

The Final Outcome

By partnering with us, they successfully launched the new system, which was immediately praised by surgeons as a new standard in usability and reliability.

Accelerated Time-to-Market:

Our “compliance-ready” HMI package saved the [Customer Brand Name] engineering team over 6 months of pre-certification and integration testing, allowing them to get to market faster.

Achieved “Zero-Failure” Reliability:

In the 24 months since the first systems were deployed, Logic’s HMIs have been used in over 15,000 surgical procedures with zero critical failures, cementing the system as a benchmark for reliability.

Total Lifecycle Security & Cost Avoidance:

The 10-Year “Frozen BOM” guarantee completely de-risked their $300M product line. This single agreement saved them an estimated $10-12 million in avoided re-engineering and re-certification costs that would have been triggered by their previous supplier.

Enhanced Surgical Performance:

Surgeons reported the new system was the most responsive and visually clear system they had ever used. The flawless glove-touch and glare-free screen eliminated interface-related delays and allowed for faster, more confident surgical navigation.

From Our Customer

“In the OR, you can’t have a ‘glitch.’ The HMI is the surgery. Logic Tech was the only partner who understood this. They engineered a display that is invisible—it works perfectly with gloves, it’s immune to glare, and it never fails. Their 10-year supply guarantee isn’t just a line item; it’s the foundation of our entire product strategy.”
